A driver's license (Surat Izin Mengemudi/SIM) is the essential document allowing you to legally drive on the road. It's a must-have for every driver out there. So, let's dive into how to snag that driving certificate before you can even think about getting your hands on a driver's license.

Rules for Using Driving Certificates in Making a Driver's License

Usually, obtaining a driver's license can be easily done through a test, but now it's different. Getting a driver's license now requires a driving certificate. When applying for a Class A driver's license, you are now required as an applicant to meet new requirements set forth in Indonesian National Police Regulation No. 2 of 2023. This regulation is a change from Indonesian National Police Regulation No. 5 of 2021 regarding the Issuance and Marking of Driver's Licenses (SIM). The official regulation enacted on February 17, 2023, explains that one of the newly required prerequisites is that the applicant must have a driving certificate as part of the administrative requirements.

Steps to Get a Driving Certificate for Making a Driver's License

According to the rule that a driving certificate is required to obtain a driver's license, so, here are some steps to get a certificate to apply for a driver's license:

1. Sign Up at a Driving School

The first step to getting a certificate is to register at a reputable driving school accredited by the local transportation authority. This registration involves submitting identity documents, registration forms, and payment of registration fees. Choose a driving school with a good reputation and experienced instructors.

2. Attend Theory Training

After registering, participants will attend theoretical training. This training includes learning about traffic rules, road signs, driving etiquette, and other basic knowledge needed for driving. The material of this theoretical training supports participants' understanding of traffic environments and provides a strong foundation before entering the practical training stage.

3. Attend Practical Training

Practical training is the next step in obtaining a driving certificate. Participants will learn directly on the road with guidance from experienced instructors. This involves applying theoretical knowledge to real-life situations, practicing driving skills, and learning safe and efficient driving techniques.

4. Take Theory Exam

After completing the theory training, participants must take a theory exam. This exam is usually written and tests your understanding of traffic rules and other basic knowledge. To pass the theory exam, participants need to prepare by studying learning materials and taking online practice tests if available.

5. Take a Practical Exam

The practical exam tests participants' driving skills on the road. Participants will be placed in real traffic situations with an instructor or examiner supervising. They will be evaluated based on their driving skills, compliance with rules, and reactions to possible traffic situations.

6. Obtain the Driving Certificate

After successfully passing both exams, participants will receive a driving certificate. This certificate is proof that they have completed the required training and exams to legally drive and apply for a driver's license.

7. Apply for the Driver's License

The next step is to apply for the driver's license at the local police station or relevant agency. Participants must attach the driving certificate, application form, and other required documents. This process involves verifying participants' documents and data before the driver's license can be issued.

8. Receive the Driver's License

Once the application is verified, participants will receive a valid driver's license. This license grants legal driving rights and must be carried at all times when driving. License holders are expected to always comply with traffic rules and drive responsibly.

Costs Involved

The cost of attending driving school and getting your certificate can vary. It depends on factors like the type of vehicle, duration of training, and instructor experience. Some schools offer package deals covering the entire process until you get your Class A license. In the Jabodetabek area, for example, driving school costs range from IDR 700,000 to IDR 2 million.

Following the correct procedure to obtain a driving certificate is an investment in skills and knowledge that will help you face challenges on the road. By obeying traffic rules and driving with discipline, every driver's license holder can contribute to creating a safer traffic environment
