Until now, Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MPV) currently dominate the market, making up 40 percent of total vehicle sales compared to other types of cars such as SUVs, city cars, sedans, or hatchbacks. According to data garnered from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), the Toyota Avanza specifically has succeeded in selling over 1.7 units since first being launched.
Another factor that contributes to the MPV’s success in thriving within the Indonesian market is Indonesian culture itself; indeed, Indonesians are generally people who like to gather in large groups. This is directly tied into the fact that Indonesian families generally tend to purchse cars that are able to handle larger capacities, despite such cars also being used for daily means of mobilization/transportation.
Indeed, the success of the MPV within Indonesia cannot be separated from its long history within the country. Before finally becoming a passenger car, MPVs originally functioned as a commercial car, mainly used for the transportation of goods. During this time the Mitsubishi Colt became the initial milestone for the birth of the MPV within the country, before Toyota finally came to introduce the legendary Kijang, a vehicle that has since become a staple within the local vehicle market. At that time, in 1975, the Kijang had been introduced into the Indonesian market in the form of a body pickup car. After that in 1986, Toyota has then presented the Kijang Doyok which is currently within its second generation, now holding a minibus body.
Toyota continues to innovate in introducing MPV cars into the market. In 2003, Toyota had presented the Avanza which was then adapted to Indonesia’s local conditions, making sure that the car then sold well. Various advantages are continuously being introduced by MPV car manufacturers to date.
